📕 DAD WISDOM

Look Where You’re Going

My 5-year-old is getting pretty comfortable on his bike. Maybe a little too comfortable.

I’ve been stacking some miles on foot while he rides, and I find myself saying the same thing over and over:

“Look where you’re going dude.”

We actually talked about this on the podcast last week because it feels like pretty solid advice for dads too.

There’s plenty to distract us. Somebody else is making more money, building something bigger, buying a nicer house, or just looking like they’ve got dad life figured out a little better than you do.

Meanwhile, your bike is still moving. Nothing wrong with looking around every once in a while.

Just don’t forget to look where you’re going.

RAD DAD

Noah Ohlsen

Noah Ohlsen is one of those guys who makes “professional fitness athlete” feel like an understatement. He’s a Red Bull athlete, longtime CrossFit Games competitor, and one of the more recognizable names in the sport.

But fatherhood brought a very different kind of training block.

When we first chatted with Noah, he and his wife were just a few months into life with their son, Oliver, after a tough delivery and week-long NICU stay. Oliver was healthy, but that kind of start leaves a mark.

For Noah, the hard part was supporting his wife through the anxiety that followed and trying to be a steady presence at home.

The sweet stuff came quickly, too. Oliver was already smiling, laughing, and getting more expressive by the day. Noah said he didn’t expect how quickly you can love something so small. Or how badly your upper back burns while rocking a baby to sleep.

His non-negotiable is simple: be a fun and happy dad. Smile as much as possible, so hopefully that becomes part of Oliver’s nature too.

When Plans Change

Here’s the problem: as a dad, your workout schedule is rarely fully yours. Sick kid, bad night of sleep, meeting runs long, practice gets moved.

So instead of trying to protect the perfect plan, give yourself a few ways to stay in it.

Hit your fitness dailies come hell or high water, have a backup workout, make it stupid easy to start, and if you miss, get back to it the next day instead of waiting for Monday.

Research on habit formation and exercise adherence keeps pointing back to the same idea…the easier the cue and the simpler the next step, the more likely you are to keep going.
