Hey guys. Hope Halloween was a fun one. A big shout-out to everyone who ran the NYC Marathon. We've got some exciting community news coming soon. Stay tuned!

Here’s what’s on tap today:

  • Stay hungry, stay foolish

  • This dad built a BMX park

  • Watch rec

  • Reading on the decline

  • And more…

Let’s get into it.

And if you’re new here, welcome aboard. Glad you found us.

📕 DAD WISDOM

Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish

Steve Jobs’ “stay hungry, stay foolish” line has been a favorite for a long time. Lately, I keep coming back to the foolish part.

Becoming a dad naturally makes you more responsible. You think things through a little more. You’ve got people depending on you, so of course you’re not moving through life the same way you did at 25.

But there’s a version of that where you can get almost too good at talking yourself out of things.

  • An idea feels impractical

  • Taking the kids somewhere ‘new’ feels like too much work

  • A new hobby feels like bad timing

  • Something sounds fun, but there are ten reasons why it’d be easier to skip it

Pretty soon, being sensible starts winning every argument. Maybe “stay foolish” is just a reminder not to let that happen completely.

And hopefully our kids get some of that from us too. Not careless. Not reckless. Just the willingness to act before every variable has been accounted for.

Sometimes you’ve gotta get out of your own way and go.

RAD DAD

Eric Sumner

Eric Sumner grew up building BMX ramps for his neighborhood friends. A few decades later, he's doing the same thing for his four sons in Whitesville, Kentucky.

What started with a few ramps in the backyard has grown into a legitimate BMX training park, complete with jumps and plenty of room to get into trouble. All four boys ride or skate, and Eric has been right there helping them develop their skills.

His son Cullen won the 2025 USA BMX Freestyle National Championship in the expert division. Not bad for a kid who started riding at two and a half.

We love this one because Eric found a way to share something he genuinely enjoys with his kids. He's given them a place to practice, push themselves, and spend a whole lot of time together.

And apparently, the backyard setup is working. Read the full story here.

DAD GEAR

Bulova Super Seville

Bulova’s been making watches since 1875, pioneered the Accutron in the ’60s, and has a legit place in American watch history. The Super Seville pulls from one of their 1970s designs, and it looks legit on the wrist.

Reading is becoming a helluva lot less common. Pew found that 25% of U.S. adults did not read a single book in the past year, and print reading has dropped from 72% in 2011 to 64% in 2025.

Why should you care? Because reading is linked to better cognitive function, lower stress, and slower cognitive decline later in life.

So here’s the assignment: read 10 pages tonight instead of scrolling for 20 minutes. Fiction, history, a biography, whatever. Just get back into the habit.
