FROM THE TRENCHES
Topic: Get On Their Level
One dad opened up about a tough week with his nine-year-old—lots of attitude, boundary-pushing, and a meltdown that ended with his son spiraling into shame.
Right before a consequence was coming, the kid broke down saying:
“I’m the worst… I’m a bad person… I can’t do anything right.”
Instead of doubling down, the dad knelt, hugged him, and said what every kid needs to hear sometimes:
“Our love isn’t based on how good or bad you are. Nobody’s perfect. We love you because you’re ours. We’re here no matter what.”
He admitted the days have felt tough, but that moment reminded him: sometimes the win isn’t perfect behavior…it’s showing up, steady and present, when your kid needs grounding more than correcting.
